Helpful Hemp Harvest - Manitoba Hemp

in Environment. Tags: hemp.

It's hard to know where to start when talking about why we love hemp so much. But, let's start with Manitoba Harvest, a Canadian company that knows how & why to use hemp, and does it in a way that is so "green" it just makes us feel warm and fuzzy - maybe even a bit giggly.

Manitoba Harvest farms hundreds of acres of hemp in a way that is 100% organic and totally sustainable. Although their new state of the art facilities meet or exceed all standards for sustainability, they felt there was more they could do, and partnered with Renewable Choice Energy to offset all of their electricity and gas usage through wind-power and carbon offsets.

Why hemp? Manitoba Harvest produces nutrient dense foods from hemp, which is rich in Omega 3 & 6 fatty acids. Very efficient nutrition! But, hemp fibers are also awesome for everything from paper to clothing and countless industrial uses. Simply put, this is a powerful plant. Hemp farming is a perfect example of sustainable agriculture because it is naturally pest-resistant using no pesticides, and hemp plants grow both rapidly and close together, crowding out weeds without using herbicides. Hemp is also a soil-building plant, its strong roots help prevent erosion and the leaves return nitrogen to the soil.

We've known all this for centuries, and still don't give this crop proper credit because of large agricultural lobbyists and a misplaced fear of super-mellow and giggly people eating Doritos. Time to get over it - at least industrially.
