Light Socket
Light Socket is a creative writing tutorial program to be run by high school AP English kids for the benefit of the local school communitiy. The high school students set up an after school program based at the high school or at a community center as a drop-in program for younger kids. It's important to get local writers or parents active in the program because the high school students graduate and go on to college. I described the program through the local paper, the Sonoma Index-Tribune, where I was a student reporter. The idea can be implemented anywhere. Here is the original "open plea" to the community at large:
"Even though Sonoma is a small town with just a few schools, there is little interaction among them. Once we’ve moved on to high school, our only connection with our grammar and middle school tends to be memories of time spent there.
With the current goals of education being shifted from community-based training to meeting state and “leave-no-child-behind” standards, teachers are forced to follow mandated curriculums. Creative writing programs have fallen by the wayside. While tutoring opportunities exist for math, foreign language and science, not many are being offered to improve fiction and nonfiction writing skills.
Happily Sonoma Valley is home to many talented writers - professional writers who not only teach and publish, but who also give back to the community. At the same time, the valley is also home to many aspiring writers, students like me who are currently enrolled in AP and Honors English classes at the high school. What we share in common is a passion for the written word.
I am starting Light Socket, a writing tutorial program dedicated to English education advancement for all students. It will be community based. Light Socket will bring together Sonoma writers and my peers at the high school to tutor the youth of Sonoma in the realm of creative and expository writing.
Students can receive help with a writing assignment, an essay, a report or a group project. Improving writing skills will be the byword of the program. We want to get students excited about writing and help them learn how to better express their ideas through the written word.
Rather than individual appointments, the goal is to have a set time and place where a collection of tutors will be available. Any student in the Sonoma Valley will be welcome to drop in. Light Socket will be different from other tutoring offered because students will be able to get help with their writing from an array of talented professional and peer mentors. It will also be free.
Light Socket will work with grammar, middle school and high school English teachers in several ways. Teachers who are looking for extra help or one-on-one attention for their students can contact us directly. We also plan to set up seminars that we will bring into the classroom.
As Margaret Meade wrote, "Never doubt a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." In order to get Light Socket rolling, we need skilled volunteers. If you love to write and want to share that with our students in the community please speak up."
