2008--Year of the Frog
Hi, I’m Riley. I travel with my Uncle Max, a biologist, Aunt Martha and Cousin Alice to help endangered animals around the world. Uncle Max told me that 2008 is the Year of the Frog – do you know why? Frogs are disappearing! More than half of the world's frog species are endangered because of a fungus that’s making them sick. Frog habitats are also endangered! If we don’t help save the frogs, they could become extinct. Wouldn’t it be strange if you never saw another frog in your backyard?
Frogs eat insects, like mosquitoes, and provide food for many other species, like reptiles and birds. Losing frogs would make our ecosystem seriously out of balance.
You and I can help, though. Check out www.amphibianark.org to find out lots more about frogs and what’s being done to save them. Also, you can go to your neighborhood zoo, botanical garden or aquarium and find out what they’re doing to save amphibians and how you can join in.
I’m going to help by being part of “5 for Frogs” - check it out at www.amphibianark.org/50ways.htm. It works like this: Tell 5 people about endangered frogs, salamanders and other amphibians, and for 5 months help raise money for the Amphibian Ark in any amount of “5”.
What will you do to help?
