Creepy Crawling Clickers

It happens.  As much as you talk, even believe it won’t happen, it happens.  And it’s becoming highly likely that one out of ten children and teenagers have been victims of something that went from something innocent to something that “just felt creepy.” As innocent as it started, it moved fast...before they knew it, they are exposed to inappropriate material, sex solicitation, harassment, and theft of personal information.

Ask your kids about where they click.  Grip yourself for their answers...including what they claim they’ve heard about from other people - “friends” - they know.

What do they know about MySpace? Facebook? Weeworld?  Listen, listen, and listen some more.  As a parent, what all do you know about the sites?  Ask.  Or, come already in the know.

Knowing what your kids are really up against today is sooo important.

What else do they game around with?  Chat on or buddy with?

Listen... stop the urge to  talk, and wait.   Wait for their answers...  and LISTEN.  Keep listening.  Then ask them what does “just chatting” mean?!...What’s involved?  Then stop talking...wait for their answers...listen.

The response of “we're just chatting” is a major caution flag, particularly for girls. They are full of emotion, which makes them very vulnerable and easy prey.

Common characteristics of a victim include:

- being naturally curious

- easily led by adults

- need attention and affection

- need to defy parents

Parents must reinforce their child’s sense of security, their ability to assess risk, and then learn from their mistakes.

If you don’t know, then can’t do anything about it, or to prevent it....

Parents, you do have control....

- Have rules that safeguard

- Know about the sites your kids visit

- Keep talking to your family and friends about safety

- Permit a duration of time to be online

- Where to use of computer and phones

 - Visit resourceful websites to be all the more helpful and know what to listen for
