Biofuels, OPEC and Agricultural Protectionism
A good friend who recently moved to New Zealand from Seattle just altered me to an interesting blog post about biofuels and how they may neutralize OPEC's pricing strength and give governments some relief from agricultural protectionism.
This is an important dialogue to engage in as biofuels are a critical transition solution toward next generation transportation like electric cars. In the interim, the transition could have other benefits that the food vs. fuel debate may not have fully appreciated. Reducing agricultural protectionism could save governments enormous sums of money if biofuel revenues to the ag sector grew substantially. That could give them flexibility in dealing with food supply issues.
