Where Are All the UberBabes in Business?
Are you an UberBabe? (Or an appreciator of UberBabes?) I am most definitely an UberBabe, and I'm proud of it. Now, before anyone screams "sexism" or "bias" or "cheap" or anything more profane, let me clarify. An UberBabe is not someone who's playfully pierced navel protrudes from a belly bearing top. Not necessarily anyway. An UberBabe is a woman who likes being totally feminine, but is also smart as hell, brave, a rule breaker, speaks her mind, finds her own way, goes up against "the system" in a way that allows the system to evolve, and so on. UberBabes, frankly, kick booty - and they just may save the world.
So sign me up, I'm an UberBabe.
If you dont know UberBabe, let me give you a background. UberBabe is a lifestyle brand based in Canada, but quickly taking over the world. It was created in response to a lot of the ultra-violent, utterly degrading and flat-out annoying brands in the world that manifest as video games, multi-user reality games, movies, tv shows etc.... The story and graphics are every bit as slick as any Japanese Animee, any game out there. But the heores are these amazing women who are what my friend Erik calls, "The Full Package." Smart, kind, funny, strong, sexy etc.... They don't pull their punches, the show the world everything that they are, confident that not only is it "all good," but it will make the world better.
What's cooler, however, is the vision of UberBabe's creator, Lisa Voldeng. We were chatting (she's an UberBabe, inspires me, i want to be like her if i grow up), and she told me that she would rest when UberBabes were lobbying the World Bank together about real world issues like education, homelessness, genocide. When little girls were watching UberBabe antics rather than things like Hannah Montanta (my example) that were teaching them sarcasm and sneakery. The UberBabe movement is one of pure empowerment of women to be whatever kind of woman they want to be.
It's an age-old query for many of us. What does a feminist look like? My mother had one answer. My aunt another. And women all too often cling to their own idea of what it means to be a "mother," "wife," "lover," "woman in business," and look down at those who's definition is different. But an UberBabe wouldn't do that. An UberBabe would look at any empowered woman and say, "that's cool, what can I do to help."
Which gets me back to my original question: Where are all the UberBabes in business? I need you. I want you. I crave you. And we need to get together and support each other.
Here are some that I know:
Ksenia Oustiougova starting a kids media publishing company called LiliPip http://www.lilipip.com
Sam Reich-Dagnen also has another kids media company called Braincandy http://www.braincandykids.com
Lisa Voldeng, creator of UberBabe, and other cool tech projects you can check out at www.sugar-lab.com
Becky Johnson is Executive Director of DonorsChoose and saving the world one smile at a time www.DonorsChoose.org
Diana Reid who left corporate America to work with impoverished women at Unitas www.Unitas.com
I know there are more out there. Who are you? Where are you? I'll start an UberBabes of Business Cause, and we can work together to help others. Mentor young ones? Just vent and support? I dont' know what form it will take, but I do know that there has never been a better time to be an UberBabe and a business leader and a woman.
It is different, being a woman in business. But it's great. Let's join forces and make something good.
I'll write more later, as the thoughts gel in my head, but I know that when I run into these women, i am inspired by them, humbled to be their colleagues and energized to think about the future we are creating.
And, for the record, I love men. I love them in business and I love them in life. And I would whole-heartedly encourage the formation of an UberDude group too. I would love to see men embrace their many dimensions as well, because they are every bit as smart, sensitive, funny, generous, loving and silly as we are. And sometimes I think they have an even harder time allowing all those sides to flourish. Luckily, UberBabes are all about loving the people around us helping them unleash their inner-ubers also.
Now, let's find those UberBabes and see what we can do. I want a big list of uberBabes in business. I think our first mission should have something to do with kindness and compassion - October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. What would an UberBabe do to solve that problem?
