A 15 year-old From Norway Made My Day
We all have those "now I know I've made it" moments. And they are widely varied.
A 15 year-old from Norway delivered me one of those moments in my inbox last week.
But let me back up..... As I have been building this company (first alone, and now with an incredible team) I often have fake interviews with leading publications. I pick the publication based on what issue I am trying to sort out. And then I interview myself, and for some reason it helps me figure things out in my head. Saying them out-loud, in a conversation (however imaginary,) has always been a great way for me to organize and express the sometimes jumbled mess that is my overactive brain. I have been interview by Ms Magazine about being a woman and mother in the business world. Fast Company about breaking all the rules in an industry I knew nothing about. Oprah about my commitment to health, family, and fun even as we tried to decide between IPO and Acquisition. (I even did an interview with Playboy - I think that was on a day when i realized I hadn't showered in 2 days and was still in my robe and wool socks at 3 in the afternoon.) In any event, these interviews provide me a "finish line" from which i can look back (to the present) and figure out what i need to do to get THERE.
So, color me shocked when a 15 year-old from Norway wanted to do an email interview for an artilce that he was writing for his school paper. Coolest interview I've ever done.
He's a JUST CAUSE member, and in his profile, he said, "I dislike the pointlessness behind most friend networking sites and I feel that this one is worth checking out" Right there, I was extremely gratified, because it means that he can tell the difference between us and MySpace and Facebook. Cool.
More than that, he's in Norway.... and I don't know anyone in Norway, so he found us on his own. Something's working. The fact that he's so young tickles me to no end, because one of my underlying beliefs is that if you attract people based on their psychographic profiles, then their demographics dont' matter as much. I believe that "causes" are larger than age, race, income etc.... and that, as such, this can be a community for a wide variety of people who happen to have common causes. So this 15 year-old from Norway really made my day.
Now, presumably, he's busily writing a paper on how online social networking can create positive change in the world. And at at International high school in Norway, hundreds of teenagers are learning about JUST CAUSE, because of this young man.
Who needs Larry King? This may just remain the most important interview of my life.
