Bill & Ann Schweer
Last year, Save the Family served 195 families including 393 children in its Transitional Living Program and an additional 114 families with 226 children in its Affordable Rental Program. Through an outreach to local schools, Save the Family served an additional 2500 youths. Headquartered in Mesa, Arizona, with 80 transitional housing units in Mesa, Chandler, Tempe and Scottsdale, they are serving - and yes, saving - families all over Arizona..
Needless to say, that takes a lot of volunteers and a lot of donors. Even if all you're donating is a pair of boots you don't wear anymore. You see, Save the Family operates a thrift store that now generates $50,000 a month, 100% of which goes to support their programs. And that thrift store is run, of course, by two very special volunteers.
Thrift Store Managers, Bill and Ann Schweer, although volunteers, often spend more than 40 hours a week at the store. They handle recruitment, training, and scheduling of all the volunteers for the store. In addition, they sort donations, tag and price items, restock shelves, and Bill even delivers furniture to customers' homes! In addition to the days and weekends spent at the store, the Schweers are constant advocates of Save the Family. They do speaking engagements, presentations, and press interviews for the organization. At ages 68 and 71 they demonstrate to the community that you are never too old to make a difference.
